I agree with you, Chrono, I have had no issues at all with the one Win 10 upgrade that I did.
I am not finding much, if any, differences between the RTM and the last TP.

Well I installed again and decided to live with that stupid search box in place of Quick Launch and pin Pale Moon and Outlook to taskbar and everything is running fine. I'll wait to screw with this later but first I need to make an image file!

Just a quick question. The "Search for Web and Windows" is taking up too much of my Task Bar.
Is there any way to reduce the size of it? Takes up nearly a third of the task bar.
Would much rather just an Icon.

Yes I just took a few second to play around here with it and this will do it in the below screenshot - although it does make the taskbar and the icons on it smaller, but you can just uncheck "lock the taskbar" and drag up one notch to make it larger. Here is what it looks like now with it small. At least it does sort of solve that issue but I do prefer the larger taskbar. Just check "use small taskbar buttons." I'm sure there is another workaround we will come across.

I plan to remove it so I can get my Quick Launch back as I hate the "pin to taskbar" because they icons that way are too far apart . I would bet in Programs and Features it could come out all together as uninstalling a windows feature.

Nothing Dougie the Windows Search Bar is covering that area. That is where I blew away the system before when I tried to restore the quick launch.

My Win8.1 laptop still hadn't received the Win10 upgrade today.
Decided to use the Media Creation Tool from M$ to force the upgrade.
Backed up everything before hand.... but didn't need to use the backup.
After 2 hours all is running nicely.
I did uninstall Eset Nod32 before downloading Win10 just to be safe.
Re-installed after the upgrade without any problem.

I neglected to mention the second time I did the upgrade I used the media creation tool also and I am using it tonight. I have a new Lenovo laptop ready to deliver to a client who doesn't have very good skills or luck so I want to give him the new laptop with Windows 10 on it, so I am using the tool tonight to upgrade his laptop before I deliver it rather than waiting for him to screw it up later. I know some would say my goal is making money and I make money when they screw them up, but I just think there is a better way! As soon asa the smoke settles I will use the tool to up my laptop as well.

I have now upgraded 2 Windows 8.1 desktops to 10 and also 2 Windows 7 desktops as well and so far, no issues at all
as I am developing a routine I do now for all Windows 10 installs I.E. hide the grotesque Search Bar, install Stardock8 or Classic Start for Start Menu as the Microsoft one is still very poor and also big and unwieldy and so on and I am liking it so far. I am still not ready to take my main desktop away from Windows 7 quite yet.

On a few occasions I had a pile of failures with the media tool but you have to persever and keep trying than it finally works.

Just a word of caution, Rich. There seems to be an issue with upgraded Windows 7 and Office 2013 documents.

You can hide the Search box or turn it into an icon by right clicking the taskbar and then open "search" and you will see the options.

Have upgraded 3 systems this week with no problem at all.
But the 4th (Win 7 Home Premium) is a nightmare.......
Runs all the checks, checks for updates, creates the install media..... then when it comes to the first reboot, it throws up a 'Installation Failed' message.
I've tried the normal get win10 app, the create media tool and the win update method..... nothing works.
Have gone through all the recommended things to alter/try:
    • Removed Emsisoft AntiMalware. (apart from MS Office 2007... nothing else is installed )
    • Ran scannow (which did replace a couple of corrupt files)
    • Ran the Win Update fixit from MS.
    • Checked that all Win updates have been done.
    • Ran the MS Cleanup program and removed everything.
    • Altered the locale from English to USA.
    • Cleared the Software Distribution/Download folder.
Seems we are going to come up against the odd system that just won't have Win10.

True, what is the hardware on that machine in question? Maybe it has one thing that is kicking it out as non compatible?

I have found that twice Pete. I had to restart the media tool about 5 times on one of them before it miraculously went forward. I also had one where I had to restart do all updates including software updates that were not critical and then bingo it started and completed. I thought about seeing if the bios was new enough on the one failure but the 6th try worked like a "treat" for whatever reason so I never did it.

Everything seems fine with the system being compatible:

There were 7 optional updates, which I've just added.

Another annoying things are.... notification said win10 was ready to install, but when I clicked to run the install it said that win10 was still downloading!!
Rebooted after installing all updates.... checked on restart, no updates available. But when i go to shutdown it says win updates to install!!
It's done this 3 times now.

    Another failed attempt this afternoon.
Am thinking of running a clean reinstall of Win7 (as I do have the installation disc) get it all updated and then run the Win10 upgrade.
That's the only option i seem to have now.
Failing that, It's not too important as this is the wifes pc and she isn't too bothered about the upgrade.

Whoever at MS came up with this idea.... needs sacking.

    0434121f4fd98907bfa91fb314420426.png

At least tell us why it's failed.

I saw that about 8 times on the one I kept restarting and then did every update and it finally completes after using Media Tool over and over again.

I saw that too on my laptop. It said "ready to install' but was in fact still downloading in the background supposedly but I could tell it was actually not doing that. What I did was restart 2 times and it finally started the real download.
