Sandboxie: All AV programs can have a failure rate, so sandboxing is the primary layer of protection. Sandboxie will catch malware where the realtime monitoring function of AV program might fail to do so.

Norton Internet Security: Completely revamped with the introduction of the 2009 version but still in the process of shaking off the poor reputation of the versions before that. It is a very silent security suite (hardly know it's there) - Light on computer resources - A good 'set and forget' program - Respectable detection rates - Good overall protection. Kept installed for the unlikely event that malware jumps the sandbox, or for if I accidentally go on the Internet without Sandboxie's protection.

Norton DNS: This filters bad sites at the source. There are other DNS servers that offer this protection. No software involved, just a matter of changing some numbers on the computer.

Security Task Manager (not a realtime monitor): Shows in detail what is running on the computer. The paid version includes an anti-keylogger that can be switched on when doing online financial dealings.

Trusteer Rapport: Perhaps not needed but installed because my bank asks that it is used. If anything were to go wrong with my bank account, I'll be able to say that I was using their recommended security program. A little less dispute about the computer's security arrangements.

Rapport unfortunately doesn't work within Sandboxie and it goes against the grain to go on the Internet without using it. However, Sandboxie will have previously done its job of keeping malware off the system, so there's not much liklihood of unknowingly installed hidden malware looking at what I'm doing.

SUPERAntiSpyware (free version): Used for the occasional full system scan.

    Edit: Typos

No secret that I say use FREE ware unless you have a network of computers. For me the virus program currently is Avast Free. Malwarebytes as an addition if computer acts as if there may be a problem. Spyware Blaster for the WEB. PC Tools Fire Wall Free. That's it.

    Thanks

Yeah same as Wildman for first 2, Avast and Malwarebytes but I generally use Windows Firewall it does the job when behind the router firewall.

I run my antivirus scan every week for a Quick Scan and a Full Scan every month, plus keep Windows up to date, I assume MSE has similar/equivalent settings for quick and full scans.

So if you are doing a quick scan every day it doesn't hurt but you would be fine with a quick scan every week, you don't need a full scan every day, some people would even call it overkill for a full scan every week, My scan settings are pretty much based on my experience with computers I deem it fine to have the scans through those periods, for someone like you who has listed "some experience" maybe alternate the scans every week to be safe i.e. Full Scan Week 1 & 3 of the month, Quick Scan Week 2 & 4 of the month, that should be sufficient enough.
I don't know if it is possible in MSE (Kenb would be better to tell you about this) but in Avast you can create custom scans, which would if you wanted to scan more often than my first suggestion allow you to schedule quick scans twice a week and then once in the weeks when you set it to run a full scan.
But in reality you should be fine with the 2 full scans & 2 quick scans a month.

Think it depends upon the individual an what they have on their machine. With my Avast I always have all the shields on, I have set the custom scan to do a full scan once a week an to scan all areas. Setting up the schedule uses military time (mine is 18:00 Sunday, 6:00 P.M.) The scan takes on average 30 minutes to complete, but could take longer depending on how much is on ones machine.

    Thanks

HI Wildman , when you say scan all areas, does that mean a full scan??
and after I did a full scan in MSE , IT took care of them.
    thanks.
just checking if my attachments are working.

I think you are hanging on to too many posts without seeing their relationship to each other. Regardless of what program you are using to scan whether it is an antivirus program or an anti malware/spyware program unless you are doing a custom scan. (And you will not be doing that.) both a full scan and a quick scan will scan "all areas." The difference is how deep it goes into each "area" and not whether it is covered.

Here is the bottom line: Add an anti malware program such as malwarebytes as suggested above (and again I suggest you invest in the paid version) and use it along with your AV program.

Folks, lets not over complicate this.We sometimes tend to post to each other and disregard the experience level of the original poster and the question posed.

While we get some highly technical posts that require a highly technical reply it still has to be geared to the experience level of the original poster. We are here for everyone.

I am going to disagree with BeeCeeBee here. ( sorry Barry )

You don't need the paid version.
The free version is good enough - really.
This is the only version that the security guys suggest when they are cleaning a system.
If you keep it up-to-date and run it every couple of weeks then all will be ok.

The only advantage I can see to the paid version is that it runs in the background ( constantly checking ) and will auto- update.
The free version needs you to decide to run it and you have to update it ( you do get prompted ).

$25 is not a lot - it depends what you want from the package.

    kayrose,

If you have MSE running and you install MBAM ( as suggested ) the two compliment each other well.
If you decide on the paid version of MBAM - fine.
If you decide to go with the free version ( I use this ) this will be fine too.

Once you have decided what time and day you want MSE to scan you need do nothing else.

MBAM is set to "Quick Scan" as default.
This is the one I use.
Don't worry about it - just run the default settings.
If it ever finds anything we are here to help :)

I mean I let it go as deep as possible an every thing I have on the C:\ hard drive is looked at to include any file(s) that may be hidden. This gets a wee bit technical, but let's say it is like having a complete physical rather than just a quick listen.

    Thanks

I agree when it comes to cleaning a system. The free version will do exactly the same thing as the paid, pro version. I believe that somewhere in this multitude of threads that Starbuck suggested the pro as well.

However when it comes to catching things as they come up there is no substitute for real time scanning. When it comes to someone who is basically a beginner when it comes to security real time protection is by far the best. I tend to agree with KenB and Wildman but only for the more experienced user and only if money is an issue. The free version is great for finding a cure but the pro is really preventative.

That being said, I have noted elsewhere that this is one of two threads running on the same subject and started by the same person. I have closed the other one leaving this one open. I have no idea anymore who said what and where. That is unacceptable.
