    Hi kayrose,

It is a matter of choice. I would never pay for AV software whilst there are good free ones available.

I used to use AVG - but this began to get a bit of a negative press - so I changed my laptop ( which I use most ) to MS Essentials.
I am pleased with it so far ( been using it for a good few months ).

Opinions change as AV software develops.

At the moment Essentials is doing the job for me.

    Just a note:
You should only have one AV on your system at a time.
    MBAM is not an AV.

As Ken says its a matter of choice if you pay you get a few extra bells and whistles, that you'll probably not use, so I always go for the free ones.

at the moment I'm using MSE same as Ken but I do like Avast, but I'm Quite happy with MSE at the moment.

But the key to a good AV apart from stopping infections is to me it should not be seen or heard until it actually does something

    Dear Ken
Is it ok to use the mbam with my McAfee until it expires in about 60 days now.
then what do you suggest I use to take mcafee's place,
also should I use something like a wndows defender, etc for more Protection

    What is MS essentials.
COuld i use that instead of mcaffee

pardon ME for my lack of knowledge of computers.
but you told me to ask
    :) :snckr:

So im guessing MSE works like AVAST, AVG,
IF so I will do that one when my mcAfee expires.

    thanks,

McAfee :( Do you not find that that gets really annoying?

I had a free 12 month licence once it was only on my PC a couple of days. before I got fed up of its persistent interference, and annoying pop ups every five seconds. soon removed that :snckr:

    Hi kayrose

Good idea to get rid of McAfee.

    Essentials is a good option.
It is free and does a good job.

With Essentials you do not need Defender.

When McAfee expires and you intend to replace it there is a removal tool that will clean up after the "Uninstall" process.
    Post back nearer the time.

Please pay particular attention to Ken's last instruction. McAfee is very intrusive so it is not enough to just not renew your subscription. As noted there is a very simple tool that will rid you of all remnants of McAfee. When you are ready please let us know.

Now, personally, if you are going to go to MSE or any other free combinations I would rid myself of McAfee ASAP. I know it seems a waste to not "get your money's worth" but but that assumes you are getting your money's worth to begin with.

I was just redoing my daughter's old computer from scratch and one of the first things I did was fully delete the McAfee free trial and installing an alternative.

If you do not want to do it now, diary yourself to come back and look at this a few days before so we can familiarize you with how to get rid of it. As I said, it is very simple but need to be done right. You will have no trouble understanding what to do.

    Hi kayrose,

    OK.

    Uninstall McAfee
I think Win7 is the same as Vista .....(not a Win7 user)
Start > in the search box type .......programs and features ......ENTER
You should get a list of installed software - McAfee will be there ( there may be 2 or 3 different entries )
Click on the McAfee entry - there should be an "uninstall" option. Click on this.

After this entry has uninstalled have a look for anything else related to McAfee and uninstall that too.

I did one recently and there were 3 different entries.

Once you have uninstalled all McAfee entries close Programs and Features.

Once you have uninstalled it DO NOT use the internet other than to do the following:

Download the McAfee cleanup tool from here:
    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
    Run this.
It will clean up the uninstall process.

    ==================================

Download and install MS Essentials from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security_essentials/default.aspx

I would recommend that you select "Run" rather than "Save" from the download box - no point clogging up your hard drive.

    ==================================

    Job done :)

Let us know when this is done - there are one or two settings that you may wish to change.

    DONE , cutie pie.
can't give myself any credit as you made it all so easyyyyyyy for me.
i'm so excited with this new antivirius.

    Ok i'm asking.
Does microsoft scan, update, etc , automatically
and do they do both the quick and full scan?
    or is that my duties.

what scan should it be on,
quck or full, as it is on quick now.
    or alternate?
wondering if I should change the time
to late at night , for the full scan.

    thanks again!!!!!
    :peace: :shake:

    Love, Hugs

    Hi kayrose,

Yes it does - and you have the option to do this manually ( but there really is no need to do this ).

Essentials will run the quick scan by default.
If you set it to "full" then it will run this one.
I would leave it on "quick" - if it ever finds anything then you may wish to run a full scan then.

This is what I wanted you to post back for.
You can set the day and time for your own convenience - your computer needs to be switched on for the scan to run.
Essentials runs in the background too - so any virus that finds its way onto your system is detected automatically - not just at the selected time for a scan.

It can run the scan in the background whilst you do other things.

I would, for the time being, leave the other settings to the defaults.

I haven't used McDuffy McAfee for years.
As others have said, it became too intrusive.
You need an AV that works for you not against you.

This is part of my cleanup speech that explains the things you are interested in.
I only recommend programs that i have either used or am actually using myself.
An old school rule.... i would never recommend anything that i wouldn't use myself.

    • Use an AntiVirus Software
      Note*:
Upon installation MS Security Essentials will check that your OS is a legal copy.

      Only install one AntiVirus program
    • Update your AntiVirus Software regularly
    • Use a 3rd party Firewall NOTE: If choosing Zone Alarm be aware that the free version also installs ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker. It is recommended however that you UNcheck this option.

      Only install one software Firewall

Some 3rd party Firewalls will turn off the windows firewall when they are installed.
It's always best to check that the Windows Firewall is turned off:

How to turn off Windows Firewall:
Start ... Control Panel ...click on 'Classic View'.
      now select Windows Firewall.
When the Windows Firewall box opens, put a tick against .. Off (not recommended) and then click Ok
    • Scan regularly with a 'Stand Alone' Anti-Malware scanner:
Installing another scanner that you can run once or twice a week is always beneficial.
      Something like:
      Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
      SUPERAntiSypware
Remember to update these programs each time before running.
You can install more than one of these if you only run them as stand alone programs.
    • Use an alternative browser:
Some excellent alternatives to MS Internet Explorer are:

      Firefox
For added security, add the NoScript extension to this browser:
Allow active content to run only from sites you trust, and protect yourself against XSS and Clickjacking attacks
      also consider adding:
      WOT - Safe Browsing Tool

Web of Trust warns you about risky sites that cheat customers, deliver malware or send spam. Millions of members of the WOT community rate sites based on their experience, giving you an extra layer of protection when browsing or searching the Web.
Btw: you don't have to make a contribution.

      Opera

They offer better security, more stability, and better speed.
    • Keep a backup of your registry
Keeping a regular backup of your registry will help when something goes wrong.
      Use a program like:
      Erunt

A full tutorial on how to set up and use Erunt can be found here:
      Erunt tutorial
    • Keep your system clean of temp files etc, using a 'Cleaner':

Cleaners are programs that will help to clean out your:
      Windows temp files
      Current user temp files
      Cookies
      Temporary Internet flies
      Browser history
      Recycle bin
      Etc.......
In other words.... all the rubbish that you accumalate over the course of your browsing and day to day usage of your pc.
      Programs like:
      TFC by OldTimer
      ATF Cleaner
    • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
    • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
      Using and installing SpywareBlaster
    • Update all your 'Security' programs regularly - Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
