I recently did a system restore on my dell dimension DIMC521 and I didn't like the change so I did another restore back to the original date before the first restore. Now I have no system restore at all and when I try to access the internet via Internet Explorer I have a box that says File DOWNLOAD (at top left) and the following info:

    NAME: start_mysearch_com.HTML
    TYPE: Chrome HTML Document, 9.93KB
    From: start.mysearchdial.com

Can you access the Internet in an alternative browser? Try resetting IE and see if all goes to normal.

You could be right on the infections part. Start My Dial is noted for things such as taking over someone's search-bar and query.

Bunchfish, while you await help from a malware-removal expert, it would be good thing to do meanwhile to look at the list of installed programmes through control panel and manually search in the search bar for the name 'Start my dial', if it's there then uninstall it.

    Hi bunchfish,

We should be able to deal with this fairly easily.
    Mmm famous last words :)

    Note:
There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool available. Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type.

If you are unsure what you're system bit type is..... click Here for help.

For x32 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to your Desktop.

    • Double-click the downloaded icon to run the tool. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator

    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

    • Make sure that Addition.txt is selected at the bottom
    • Press Scan button.

      1b8c7ec40ba5fc57455a82d8388da693.png
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
    • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please copy and paste it to your reply also.

    Thanks

Thanks for the advice. However I am unable to download because I can't access the internet. I failed to mention that when I boot up I receive the message-Diskette drive 0 seek failure.
Press F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup

    Hi bunchfish

You just caught me before i retire for the night.

If your PC has a 3.5" Floppy disk drive installed, then it has most likely failed the "Floppy drive Seek" test in POST.
Does pressing F1 bypass this and start the system?
If not.... you will need to enter the bios and disable the floppy drive.
This is what the F2 option is for.

I've located the manual for your system if you require it.
    521 User Manual

Pages 97 & 98 will explain the bios and how to navigate it.
Page 99 explains about the Drive options.

    Set the option to Off.

I do not have a 3.5 floppy. Yes F1 will boot to start-up.

Just use the F1 option to boot the system then.
We can sort the problem out later.

    Hi bunchfish,

Have you managed to get the reports from FRST?
