This is the third time i have had a virus and i guess 3 times is a charm
since this is the only one that has me in tears.
AVG8.5 had found this virus and named it win32/virut but of course
could not remove it. so i went to run a hijack this and there was more
and more of them multiplying in my executables. so i went into safe mode
so get the virus to stop freezing everything i was trying to do to and
it and when i ran spy bot it found a butt load of these files and could
delete a few of them but said that the rest would be deleted upon start
up. so i ran a hijack this again and all of the files had the title
spybotdeleteblahblah so i decided since i could remove them better with
hijack i did. then when i restarted my computer everything was gone, my
login was different my desktop would not even show up so i went back
into safe mode and i keep getting all these errors that my links dont
work and everytime i run a program it cant find it or it freezes and
shuts down so then i tried to try to do a system restore and the exe for
system restore is gone deleted now and i think that all my other exe's
are gont too but the system restore pic is there just the exe is gone
please help!!!!!!! i dont know what to do!!!! ps i do not have the
    reboot cd thingy

Anyone who gets a virus three times is too stupid to be using a
    computer on the Internet.

    what you might
    do is to initiate
    a system restore
    point.

    the older the better.

    also, uninstall
    that avg since it
    is not working.

    afterwards, run
    this and select
    full scan:

Try this download. You burn the image to a blank CD then boot the
infected machine to it; it clears out the malware without Windows
running so the malware can't get control. This is software from Avira.
I haven't seen it work yet, but they're improving on it and today might
be the day! It's a great concept; the malware can't get control and the
system running from the CD has complete control to eliminate all problems.

    http://forums.techarena.in/tips-tweaks/1157825.htm

Just download the .exe rather than the ISO.

Other software you might run from a thumbdrive after downloading to an
    uninfected machine:

    SuperAntispyware
    http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

    McAfee Stinger
    http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=stinger

    Kaspersky® AVPTool
    http://avptool.virusinfo.info/en/
    Direct:
    http://downloads5.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/

    Dr.Web CureIt!® Utility - FREE
    http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/

To get control of links and executables again, go to the following site
and run the fixes for .lnk, .exe and whatever else won't execute.
    Fix File Associations.
    http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Installing the drive in another machine, you could run different
programs and the malware couldn't get control either. Just don't run
    anything on the infected drive.

Kelly's site has quite a few fixes. If you get rid of the malware, you
might get control again using her site:

    /* WIPE IT ! */

This is a true file infecting virus. This is not some oddball malware being falsely named
a virus. This is a NASTY VIRUS.

If you have the Virut Virus then the *best* recourse is to wipe the computer and
partitions and re-install the OS from scratch.

BTW: You said you used "spy bot". If this was SpyBot Search and Destroy, it is worthless
for a virus such as this. It targets non-viral malware and certainly NOT file-infectors.
The same goes for MBAM, SuperAntiSpyware, etc...

Nope. does not clean file-infectors such as the viurut virus.

Nope. does not clean file-infectors such as the virut virus. Its an anti worm tool and
