    Hi,
I have a serious problem that started yesterday. My gf was watching
some shows on Hoola. An hour or so later i checked on the computer and
it was frozen. I restarted the PC but now it just constantly freezes if
I try to click on any icon or randomly rebbots if i just sit watching
it. I left overnight and tried again this moring, but it was doing teh
same thing and won't let me boot into Safe Mode! (which it allowed me to
    do last night)

I have a custom built PC that hasn't given me any problems for 2 years
now. Its running Windows XP. The only changes I have made in the last
few days was to add an Ethernet Splitter to the cable outlet. Other than
that, only my gf looking at shows on Hoola (for the first time)...she
claims she didn't download anything, but I dunno!!

I see some other posts like this one but I am not even able to stay on
the PC for more than a minute before it crashes and I can't run my virus
scanner as it freezes before it completes. Any help would be most
    welcome!

Remove the hard drive from your computer and put it into a known 100%
malware-free computer as a secondary drive. This computer must have
running, updated, effective malware scanning software. Scan the hard
drive for malware. I would advise you to have a professional do this.

Try doing a System Restore to a prior date when all was ok.

    First, change girlfriends!
    .......

Seriously, you might try opening up the (left) side of the computer
case to make sure the CPU fan is running and is not completely clogged
with crap. Also - unplug everything from ALL of the USB ports,
including mouse, keyboard, and any flash drives.

Freezing can be a sign of overheating, something loose, a bad power
supply, or a bad motherboard, memory, or CPU. If it's custom-built,
give the person who built it a call to see what they have to say.

    Good luck....
    with that girlfriend, that is...

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
1.36 -freeware (if you upgrade you pay).
    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Run Malwarebytes' in safe mode and turn off your current anti-virus
before you do to avoid a conflict. Disregard the invitation on the web
site regarding the Registry Optimiser -a Registry Optimiser is not a
    helpful utility.

Thanks for all the information. I fear that my problem is hardware. I
got an error report that said it was either the RAM. Fan, processor or
Power Supply. The fans are running ok, but I'm not sure about how to
check the rest. I cleaned out the inside, but it made no difference. I
better take it in to a repair shop!

Thanks for all the feedback and I guess I better say sorry to the gf :)
I guess I'm going to see Marley and Me for this hahaha

    Thanks again

What error report? Based upon what is posted, you should keep
replacing everything in software and hardware until something works.
Literally - that is what most of your replies are saying. Your
symptoms currently says anything is bad.

Or you could see the problem before replacing anything. That is why
better computers come with comprehensive hardware diagnostics. That
is why Windows has log files and other information record a problem,
    then work around it.

Currently, you have a problem either in hardware or software. Step
one is to discover which side is defective - again long before even
disconnecting anything. Or just start buying parts. Just keep
replacing good hardware and reload the OS until something works.

To get a useful reply, you must even quote that error message that
says it is hardware. And if any work or number makes no sense to you,
then it is problem the most important piece of information - but only
to the few who actually know this stuff. Those few will remain
silence if you don't provide details quotes and specific numbers.
Others will keep telling you to replace things.

    Hi,

I understand your point. The message came during one of my last
reboots. Windows connected to the Microsoft server to upload an error
report and when I asked for the details it said that the power failure
was due to a Hardware problem, and it gave 3 possible causes
    1. RAM
    2. Power Supply
    3. Processor

It makes sense in a way, as I can get into Windows for a variable
amount of time at the moment, but it always either crashes or reboots
from 1-8 minutes. During this time, everything works fine.

I'm going to get a diamostic run to find out what it is, but I am
unable to do it myself because the computer crashes before any
    diagnostic can complete

Please post a copy as it appears on Event Viewer.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
    hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
    are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Right click on the Report in
the list and select Properties. In the window, which appears are three
buttons towards the top right of the window. The top one has an arrow
up, underneath is an arrow down and third is a button resembling two
pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. It is not obvious but
this action places a copy of the report in your Clipboard. Now start
your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make
sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.
