Help! Device Manager says laptop's CD drive can't load drivers, etc

The CD/DVD drive on my XP laptop has ceased to work. Device Manager
has a yellow flag on it and Properties says

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver
may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

There are no errors in Syetem Events.

If I "remove" it and scan for new hardware, It finds the hardware but
    gives me the same message.

I've tried full reboots with and without the drive and the problem
    remains.

The drive identifies as "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4243N". It was a
replacement for the factory drive and when I bought the new drive, it
worked without needing any new drivers.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Al,

There are quite a few reason for you to see that error. Some may be caused
by software installed on your machine. To try a walkaround with the
following KB article from Microsoft seems to be a good option.

The last resort may be to install the OEM driver of your CDROM. I did not
see it but you may find clue from any manual or the reseller about the
driver or the OEM web site. Regards

    Donald
