Annoying Silverlight update problem

After installing the September updates on my XP Pro SP3 machine, I
decided to switch from Windows Update to Microsoft Update. It offered me
the optional Silverlight which I'm not ready to try yet.

I clicked on "do not show me this update again" and rescanned for
updates. The Silverlight update was still being offered, but with a
    different KB number.

Every time I clicked on "do not show me this update again" and rescanned
for updates, it kept offering me an earlier version, seven times in
total, before I was finally able to not have Silverlight being offered.

In order, the Silverlight packages that were offered were KB974331,
    KB970363, KB960353, KB957938, KB955305, KB951213, and KB946609.
    Annoying, to say the least!

Annoying is putting it mildly. It's like the 'Michael Myers' of updates.
Just because a KB number changes it does not mean that Users have
changed their minds about installing Silverlight.
Software that a User has *no* interest in installing should *stay
hidden* no matter what the KB number is.
