This is a Dell laptop, with Vista already installed on it. Not an upgrades.
I have searched high and low and cannot figure out how to fix the problem.

About a week ago I lost the ability to open files on my home network from
another computer with winxp on it.

Today I lost the ability to open files on my laptop that were created on my
laptop, I keep getting the error "access denied" I don't have the rights to
do this. No other people on my laptop, just me.

Can someone help me with this? I'm lost. I even tried a program called
    takeownership but it didn't work.

I'm using vista, I hate it. I've wasted half the day trying to get to my
    simple word files.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Also, when I right click a file or folder and look at properties and
advance, nothing is in there, there are no groups, people or admin settings.

    thank you
    M

    Nothing, no new software.
The only thing I really use my laptop for is when I want to sit somewhere
other than where my desktop is. And I use it to back up my Windows mobile
phone. But other than that, nothing is added to it.
